보통 영문법 책에는 부정문을 간단히 다룹니다.
왜냐하면 영어 부정문은 생각보다 엄청 어렵습니다.
그리고 영어에서 부정문의 종류가 많습니다.
1. not
① 조동사 + not
[조동사 : Be, Do, Have, 법조동사] 이 네 종류와 not 이
결합하여 영어에서는 부정문을 만듭니다.
She is not fool.
He did not feel better.
The goods have not arrived yet.
I can not keep my eyes open.
I would not pronounce on the issue.
(그녀는 바보가 아닙니다)
(그는 기분이 나아지지 않았습니다)
(상품이 아직 도착하지 않았습니다)
(눈을 뜨고 있을 수 없습니다)
(전 그 문제에 대해서는 표명하고 싶지 않습니다)
② 부사로 사용되는 not
not 이 부사로 사용되는 경우에는 바로 뒤의 문장을 부정합니다.
He warned me not to be late.
I was sorry not to have seen them.
(그가 나에게 경고했다 - 늦지 말라고)
(나는 미안해 했다 - 그들을 보지 못해서)
Who's next? - Not me.
What did you do at school? - Not a lot.
(다음은 누구지? - 난 아냐)
(학교에서 뭐 했니? - 별로 한 거 없어요)
Not many arrows did hit the target.
Not everybody agrees with me.
(많은 화살들이 과녁을 맞추지 못했다)
(모두가 동의하는 것은 아니다)
문장의 마지막에도 올 수 있습니다.
That's true, believe it or not.
(믿지 않겠지만 그것은 사실이다)
Right or false, it is a fact.
Right or not, it is a fact.
(옳건 옳지 않건 그것은 사실이다)
not 과 관련된 숙어들 입니다.
♣ not a : 심지어 하나도 없는
He didn't speak to me, not a word.
Are you cold? - Not a bit.
(그는 내게 말을 하지 않았다. 단 한 마디도)
(춥니? - 전혀 안 추워)
♣ not a few = quite a few = quite a little : 꽤 많은
Not a few of the members were absent.
The building needs quite a few repairs.
We made quite a little money this year.
(꽤 많은 수의 회원이 결석했다)
(그 건물은 많은 수리가 필요하다)
(올해 우리는 꽤 많은 돈을 모았다)
♣ not ~ any : 더는 ~ 하지 않는
You do not love me at all.
(너는 나를 전혀 사랑하지 않아)
You do not love me any longer.
You do not love me any more.
(너는 나를 더 이상 사랑하지 않아)
I didn't spend any time with her.
(난 그녀와 조금도 시간을 보내지 않았어)

♣ not ~ at all : 전혀 ~ 하지 않다
I cannot understand it at all.
I do not know him at all.
(나는 도무지 알 수 없다)
(그 사람을 전혀 모른다)
♣ not ~ yet : 아직은 ~ 하지 않다
He has not yet finished his novel.

(그의 소설은 채 완성되지 못했다)

(그에게서 그 뉴스에 대한 소식이 아직도 없다)

♣ not to say = not to speak of = not to mention :
말할 필요도 없이
She can play the piano, not to speak of singing.
He is handsome, not to mention being a athlete.
(그녀는 노래는 말할 것도 없이 피아노도 잘쳐)
(그가 운동선수인 것은 말할 것도 없고 미남이다)
♣ not A but B : A 가 아니라 B 이다
He said it not to me but to you.

♣ not only A but also B : A 뿐만 아니라 B 도

2. no
Yes 의 반대가 No 입니다.
Just say yes or not.
Just say yes or no.
(그런지 아닌지만 말해)
Another drink? - No, thanks.
(한 잔 더 하겠니? - 아니, 됐어)
not 이 부사적 성격이 강하면 no 는 형용사적 성격이 강합니다.
물론 no 도 부사로도 사용됩니다.
She is not fool.
She is no fool.
She is never a fool woman.
She did not felt inclination to marry.
She felt no inclination to marry.
(그녀는 결혼을 하고 싶은 마음이 들지 않았다)
no 가 주어와 함께 문장 앞으로 오면 강한 부정이 됩니다.
All man is no wise.
All man is not wise.
(모든 남자는 현명하지 않다)
No man is wise.
Not any man is wise.
(어떤 남자도 현명하지 않다)
No student is to leave the room.
Not any student is to leave the room.
(어떤 학생도 교실을 나갈 수 없다)

(학생들이 교실을 나갈 수 있는 것은 아니다)
(모두가 동의하는 것은 아니다)
아래는 no 와 관련된 숙어입니다.
♣ no better than = little better than : 이나 다름없는
He is no better than a ferocious beast.

(그는 흉폭한 짐승이나 다름없다)
(그 구조는 노예제도나 다를 바 없었다)
♣ no more than ~ :
than 보다 더 많은 것은 아니다
I know no more than that.

(저는 그것밖에 몰라요)
(하루에 세 알 이상 복용하면 안 됩니다)
♣ no less than ~ :
than 보다 더 적은 것은 아니다
He has no less than 1,000 won.
I do no more and no less than that.

♣ no longer : 더 이상 ~ 아닌
The ticket was no longer valid.

♣ 부정문 / 의문문 ~ any longer / any more : 더 이상 ~ 아닌

3. never
[never : 결코 ~ 않다] 라는 부사입니다.
He never helped me.
He did not help me.
(그는 저를 절대로 도우지 않았습니다)
(그는 저를 도우지 않았습니다)
never 가 부사라서 위치가 약간 자유롭습니다.
I never will do that again.

[부사] 편에서 자세히 설명하겠지만 부사의 위치에 따라
약간의 의미차이가 있습니다.
부사가 동사 앞에 오면 동사의 의미를 수식하는 것 입니다.

(그는 절대로 진실을 말하지 않았습니다)
never the truth : 결코 진실을 말하지 않는
never spoke : 결코 말을 하지 않는
♣ nevertheless : 그럼에도 불구하고 [부사]

(그럼에도 불구하고, 그것의 부분들은 유용하다)

4. none
all 의 반대가 none 입니다.
all 이 대명사와 부사로 사용되 듯이 none 도
대명사와 부사로 사용됩니다.
All of the workers are in the office.
None of the workers are in the office.
(모든 직원들이 사무실에 있다)
(직원들 중 아무도 사무실에 없다)
No workers are in the office.
Not any workers are in the office.
(어떤 직원들도 사무실에 없다)
None of them were invited.
Not all of them were invited.
All of them were invited.
(그들 중 아무도 초대를 받지 않았다)
(그들 중 모두가 초대를 받은 것은 아니다)

♣ none the less = nevertheless : 그럼에도 불구하고

♣ second to none = next to none : 둘째가 아닌 = 최고

♣ none too = not very : 너무 ~ 하지 않은

5. nothing
nothing : 아무 것도 없다 [대명사]
There was nothing in her bag.

(우리는 주말에 something 를 했다)
We don't have anything to complain of your work.

nothing 과 관련된 숙어입니다.
♣ count for nothing = count for little : 쓸모가 없다
Material aid count for little to them.
Material aid count for nothing to them.
(그들에게 물질적 원조는 쓸모없다)
The results count for nothing with me.
(그 결과는 내게 전혀 중요하지 않다)
♣ for nothing = without payment = in vain :
무료로 , 헛되이

short of : ~이나 다름없는

♣ nothing but : 오직 , 단지

nobody = no one = 아무도 없는 [대명사]
